The Wisconsin Badgers have had a number of players emerge throughout camp at the middle linebacker position.
True freshman linebackers Cooper Catalano and Mason Posa are both expected to play for the Badgers in some capacity during the upcoming season. Catalano has impressed the staff and delivered veteran level play even during game situations and modified scrimmages. The talented in-state linebacker is set to be the first mike backer off of the bench for Wisconsin, while Posa is currently still battling for an exact role within the defense.
Another young player who is emerging and currently challenging Posa for playing time is Thomas Heiberger, a potentially significant linebacker for the Wisconsin Badgers who put together a great camp last year as well. Unfortunately for Heiberger, last season was shortened for the linebacker after an injury at the end of camp kept him sidelined for the majority of the year.
The athlete played in four games for Wisconsin on special teams a year ago after originally being someone who would fill a similar role compared to Catalano. The Wisconsin Badgers opted to give Heiberger a redshirt last season and extend his eligibility. Heiberger did not use the injury or offseason as an excuse, however, and instead has looked stronger and sharper on the field as the season nearly approaches.
Heiberger signed on with Wisconsin as a four-star recruit and the top ranked athlete in South Dakota in the 2024 class. In high school, Heiberger recorded 39 tackles, five sacks, and five touchdowns on offense for his team as a senior. The linebacker was originally a candidate to play outside linebacker for the Badgers with a massive 6-foot-4-inch frame, but has shown promise as an inside linebacker.
Wisconsin Badgers defensive coordinator Mike Tressel stated earlier in the week that Heiberger is a guy who can play the inside position for the team if needed. While Heiberger has had a great camp, the staff is open to giving Posa a chance to play as a true freshman and should Posa continue to impress as a middle linebacker, then Heiberger will likely play elsewhere during the season.
What the staff is truly looking for during the next week of competition at linebacker is a combination of instinctual play and speed. Much like the search for the backup quarterback, the Badgers want the best player under fire to take on the backup position and that involves making plays under pressure and being in the right area at the right time. Heiberger will need to continue to put his football IQ on display in hopes of securing a spot as a middle linebacker.
