The Wisconsin Badgers tentatively have a starting lineup set for the offense and defense with some surprises named.
Running back had been a position that many felt would be a toss-up due to the talent in the room and the various different looks at player offers. However, the man expected to take on the majority of the carries for the team will be Dilin Jones, a former 2024 class signee who managed to secure a few carries as a true freshman.
Ultimately, the running back opted to take a redshirt but did make a few appearances for the program before doing so. Last season, Jones ended the year with 16 carries for 88 yards which placed him in fifth for total rushing yards on the team. Sharing carries alongside Jones throughout the season will be Darrion Dupree, a fellow 2024 class signee, who actually carved out a significant chunk of carries for himself last season.
Dupree recorded 79 carries for 317 yards and one touchdown while catching 12 passes for 119 yards receiving. The running back finished second in rushing last season for the Badgers while putting together an impressive season for someone who was thrusted into the line of fire out of need.
In the new-look Jeff Grimes offense for the Wisconsin Badgers, however, Jones will likely be the main who takes on the bulk of the rushing duties for the team while Dupree serves in a flex role. The beauty of having multiple, starting caliber running backs on the roster is that the combinations between the two become endless, and Wisconsin has begun to see that.
Grimes can utilize Jones, who has a taller frame but arguably a better top speed than Dupree, as the main force running the football due to his ability to score from anywhere on the field. Jones has a seemingly endless gas tank, and the added bonus of having someone who can give him a break should allow the running back to consistently stay fresh.
Dupree, on the other hand, is a much more capable receiver and holds a shorter, thicker frame that could benefit the Badgers in short yardage situations. Dupree can wear a defense down and like Jones, the running back can withstand multiple grinding plays in a row without showing much of a sign of fatigue.
The two should compliment each other within the Wisconsin Badgers offense very nicely under the guidance of Grimes, who has been known in the past to utilize his running backs in a similar manner.
For Jones, the running back has looked extremely sharp all camp and recently displayed tough, physical runs that have intrigued the staff to say the least. The improvements made and the development of the running back should pay off dividends during the upcoming season after managing to make his way onto the field as a raw true freshman.
