The Wisconsin Badgers received positive news regarding starting quarterback Billy Edwards Jr., but the quarterback is not out of the woods yet.
Edwards Jr. began the game with a brace on his knee after going down with a minor injury during the fall training camp portion of the season. The quarterback avoided contact and wore a brace the rest of camp, and aired on the side of caution to open the season against the Miami (OH) RedHawks. During a certain play however, Edwards Jr. went down again but this time with a non-contact lower body injury which caused serious concern for everyone.
The best news was delivered after Edwards Jr. sat out the rest of the game, however, with the injury being just a week-to-week issue moving forward. The quarterback will see how he feels during the week and then decide on playing in the upcoming game against Middle Tennessee State.
While the Wisconsin Badgers and Edwards Jr. himself are monitoring the injury, the best decision moving forward may perhaps be giving back-up Danny O’Neil the start before the schedule takes a turn.
Following Middle Tennessee, Wisconsin will travel to Tuscaloosa to take on Alabama and then travel back home to face an eager Maryland team. Currently, Wisconsin is not in a great position to contend against the Crimson Tide with just a 12.1% chance of winning according to ESPN. That statistic could look far worse without a healthy Edwards Jr. in the game or O’Neil starting, which is not a knock against the quarterback but rather telling of the level of experience needed to defeat the Crimson Tide.
Alabama has historically been a dominant program against not just SEC competition, but non-SEC opponents especially. A season ago, non-conference opponents scored just 33 points in four games against the Crimson Tide, and in 2023 Alabama manhandled Middle Tennessee to a 56-3 win which should display just what the high-powered offense is capable of. There have been plenty of changes, but Alabama will still put up points on the board regardless of the defense in front of them, which means Wisconsin will need to respond.
Middle Tennessee won three games last season and each win was by two scores or less against Tennessee Tech, Kennesaw State, and UTEP. The Blue Raiders had virtually no run game whatsoever with ten games where the leading rusher was below 50 yards for the game. Middle Tennessee also allowed fellow C-USA bottom dwellers FIU and New Mexico State to put up 35 and 36 points, respectively.
The Blue Raiders have also not made many notable additions to the roster via the transfer portal, which means the team likely will not be much better this season. Middle Tennessee currently has just a 4% chance of beating the Wisconsin Badgers in Madison, which is why the game could be used as a time to rest Edwards Jr. Even with some of the offensive line struggles, O’Neil should be more than capable enough to defeat Middle Tennessee on his own.
