The Wisconsin Badgers may have secured a win to open the season, but other programs on the Wisconsin schedule were not so lucky.

Wisconsin is set to face the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders next weekend at home in front of what likely will be a lively crowd evening crowd. The Badgers are still unsure of whether or not starting quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. will be able to play after a lower body injury was suffered against Miami (OH). However, the Badgers may not need Edwards Jr. to play after the Blue Raiders suffered one of the most embarrassing losses in program history.

Future Wisconsin Badgers Opponent Middle Tennessee Loses 34-14 Against FCS Austin Peay

Wisconsin was already expected to win with ease against the Blue Raiders, but the game may perhaps be more lopsided than many originally thought. Austin Peay secured the first FBS win the program has seen since 1987 against the Blue Raiders after putting up 34 points. Austin Peay had not scored that many points against an FBS program since doing so against UCF in 2017 when scoring 33 points while also allowing 73.

Middle Tennessee allowed the Governors to record 151 yards and two touchdowns on the ground while allowing 3.4 yards per carry. Through the air, the Blue Raiders struggled in coverage and allowed the Governors to average 7.1 yards per completion.

With the result the Blue Raiders produced combined with the strengths of the Wisconsin Badgers offense, the game could become ugly quickly. The Badgers have developed a new offense this season under the guidance of offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes and more modern tools are being utilized. Wisconsin is turning back the clock with a power run scheme while adding new ideas such as sweeps, jets, fakes, and run-pass options.

Against Middle Tennessee, Austin Peay did not have a single rusher break 40 yards and yet the team still managed to consistently run the football down the field. The key on the ground for the Governors was motion, as the utilization of gadget plays and motion threw the Blue Raiders defense off completely. Austin Peay ran the ball 45 times against Middle Tennessee with seven different players.

While the Wisconsin Badgers may find plenty of success with non traditional plays against the Blue Raiders, attacking through the air could also be very dangerous. Middle Tennessee allowed 7.1 yards per completion against Austin Peay with multiple plays through the air going for 20 yards or more.

The Blue Raiders were consistently burnt over the top by speedy receivers and playing against receivers such as Trech Kekahuna and Vinny Anthony II could produce fireworks. Middle Tennessee has talent, but not enough to stop multiple players in the secondary at once as shown in the game against Austin Peay.
