The Wisconsin Badgers went on a scholarship offer spree which resulted in one such offer being extended to a game-changing 2027 wide receiver.
Chad Willis, the 274th overall recruit in the class, is a four-star prospect, the 34th wide receiver in the class, and the fifth overall recruit in the state of Michigan. Willis currently sits behind edge rusher Recarder Kitchen in the state rankings, who also holds a Wisconsin scholarship, but could see himself rise with another successful season.
Willis holds scholarship offers from programs such as Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, and Vanderbilt. The Wisconsin Badgers are one of the newer programs to offer the receiver and have some ground that needs to be made up. “I’m open to all programs right now but I can see the Badgers push their players and I like that,” stated Willis.
Willis sat behind Michigan State receiver Bryson Williams last season but will now be the primary receiving target for St. Mary’s Prep. When asked about the recruiting process and how the process has felt, Willis stated, “A couple programs really stood out because of how personal they are with me. The coaches check in not just about football but about school and my family and that means a lot.”
With offers in hand and relationships being built, Willis has far more time to focus on the field and the receiver is prepared to make a statement during the season. The 6-foot-2-inch, 190-pound wide receiver is both an athletic presence on the field and also a dangerous play-maker who can takeoff with the football and score from anywhere.
Willis has a rare combination of natural athleticism and razor sharp technical skills on the field which creates a receiver coaches fall in love with. Willis is also an accomplished basketball guard and a track athlete with shades of each sport showing through in his football abilities.
When asked about how the other sports have benefitted his play on the football field, Willis responded, “I think playing three sports helps me stand out because it shows I’m athletic in different ways and I can compete at a high level no matter what and I am competitive and willing to work all year I think that’s helped me get noticed.”
For the Wisconsin Badgers, potentially landing Willis in the future will involve getting to know the recruit on a much deeper level. Willis spoke about how he appreciates the programs who care about his wellbeing and see more than just a football player in him. Relationships are key to the receiver, and whatever program lands a commitment in the future will almost certainly be extremely close to the recruit.
The Wisconsin Badgers and wide receivers coach Jordan Reid are known for being persistent recruiters and likely will pick up the pace as the process moves along for Willis. The Badgers are also known to take time and work with recruits, which bodes well for the development of a meaningful relationship with the two sides.
