The Wisconsin Badgers may have struggled in some areas a season ago, but punting has been an area where the team excels.
Often times being a team that is good at punting is not necessarily a good thing as many teams become skilled out of necessity. For Wisconsin, however, the team has become successful at punting due to the skill of one man named Atticus Bertrams, one of the top punters in the nation.
The punter, who is a native of Australia, recorded 20 touch-backs last season for the Badgers while averaging 45.3 yards per punt. Bertrams solidified himself as one of the better punters in college football with his performance for the Badgers last season, producing for the program seemingly out of nowhere.
Bertrams is entering his junior season with the Wisconsin Badgers and aims to break his own personal bests from a season ago. Bertrams was one of the most lethal punters last season, dropping 36.36% of his punts down within the 20-yard line while punting less overall than he did two seasons ago. The punter improved both his accuracy and his power, also adding 14-yards to his longest punt with a 74-yard bomb.
The talented Badgers punter is widely considered to be someone who will still be a candidate for the elusive Ray Guy Award at the end of the season. Bertrams earns plenty of recognition from being a watchlist candidate, however, and will take that recognition into the season.
The last time someone from Australia won the Ray Guy Award was back in 2022 when Adam Korsak won the award while playing for Rutgers. In total, Australian punters have won the award seven times in the past and displayed dominance after winning the award five years straight between 2013-2017.
Bertrams might be one of the most successful returning punters in college football, but the rest of the watchlist contains talent that could steal the award away in the end.
Fellow Big Ten Conference punters Dakin and Eckley will be names to watch throughout the season for Badgers fans as each punter could remain candidates throughout the year.
