The Wisconsin football staff added multiple new members during the offseason but one such member could be the true different maker this season.

New offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes has joined forces with coach Luke Fickell in Madison for this upcoming season and beyond. Since his hiring, Fickell has been vocal about the potential success that Grimes can bring to the program and recently the coach spoke about this again. Fickell joined Jim Rome for a recent episode of his self-titled radio show and broke down what Grimes offers the program.

Fickell was quoted saying “That balance is what Jeff Grimes brings. I think it will be a big, big difference-maker for our program.”

The balance Fickell mentioned involves the new offensive identity the Wisconsin football program will embrace that should bring back a run-heavy approach. Grimes has become known for running an offense that places an emphasis upon attacking defenses where the units are weakest. The offensive coordinator has had mixed success in the past and left the Kansas Jayhawks after scoring 20 or more points in nine out of 11 games last season.

The Wisconsin football program went too far into the future when trying to update the offense previously. The Badgers abandoned the power run and turned to a play-action, pass-heavy scheme that ultimately brought the program far from where roots had previously been.

With Grimes calling the shots on offense moving forward, the Wisconsin football team should return to a much more familiar offense. Some fans may doubt Grimes but as coach Fickell has made clear the rest of the staff and program is backing the new offensive coordinator fully.

Wisconsin Football Chasing Success With Jeff Grimes By Returning to Old Ways

Sometimes trying to update and become more mainstream is something that a program can struggle with, and the Wisconsin football program has been an example of that. However, perhaps the real fix does not involve modernizing the offense as much as the staff had previously thought.

With the hiring of Grimes, Wisconsin not only turned back the clock but also added an offensive mind who is not afraid to test boundaries. Grimes plays a fast-paced, aggressive offense that will balance run and pass when needed. Ultimately, Grimes is looking to attack a defense wherever it hurts the most, and the Badgers will be able to hurt a team in more than one way.

While many critics will be there to say that the air-raid never could truly work in Wisconsin anyways, the Badgers had no way of knowing the drastic modernization would flop without trying. Now, the only way the Wisconsin football program can save the offense is by returning to the powerful roots that the program rose from.
