When it comes to college football, the SEC is extremely competitive. It has produced nine of the last 15 national championship teams dating back to 2010.
That's why it doesn't come as a surprise that trying to be a competitive program within the conference can be extremely hard, as you're constantly going up against extremely talented rosters.
It's not something that everyone is cut out for, and in an article for Athlon Sports, senior college football editor Steven Lassan ranked all 16 head coaches in the SEC going into 2025, with Mississippi State's Jeff Lebby coming in last.
"Lebby inherited a major rebuilding project in Starkville." Lassan wrote. "And as expected, his debut in ‘24 was a struggle. The Bulldogs finished 2-10 overall and went 0-8 in SEC play. Also, just one of the team’s 10 defeats were by one score. Lebby’s ability to piece together high-powered offenses should start to show with an improved attack in ‘25, while a hefty transfer portal haul should help a struggling defense."
The Bulldogs' less-than-ideal record from 2024 isn't much of a surprise considering they ended the season tied for 85th in points per game (25.8) and ranked 118th in points per game allowed (34.2).
However, as mentioned by Lassan, there could be some hope for next year after Lebby brought in a transfer portal class of 32 players, which On3 ranks No. 11 in the SEC and No. 42 in the nation.
Still, though, even with what could end up being some huge additions, things are looking bleak for Mississippi State, as ESPN BET gives them the worst odds (+50000) to win the SEC.
If things don't start to change relatively quickly for the Bulldogs, then Lebby may soon find himself as one of the most talked-about names on the hot seat.
