WR DeVonta Smith on size concerns: 'We're not bodybuilders'

Former Alabama Crimson Tide star wide receiver DeVonta Smith won the Heisman Trophy for the 2020 season but nevertheless has found himself repeatedly answering questions over concerns about his size and, specifically, his weight. Per Kevin Patra of the NFL's website, Smith weighed 166 pounds at the Indianapolis medical check earlier this month.

Smith appeared on NFL Network's "Good Morning Football" on Tuesday and responded to those who would suggest he won't be able to take hits delivered by NFL defensive players.

"We play football. We're in a football business. We're not weightlifting. We're not bodybuilders," Smith said of his weight. "It's football. That's what we're here for. All the other stuff is irrelevant."

Smith continued that he sees himself as a jack-of-all-trades weapon.

"I can do everything -- inside, outside, you can put me on special teams," he explained. "There is nothing I can't do. No job is too big. Wherever you want to plug me in at I can do that. So, that just gives me an advantage."

In mock drafts updated this week, Ryan Wilson, Chris Trapasso, and Pete Prisco of CBS Sports all predicted the New York Giants will select Smith with pick No. 11 on Thursday night. Charlie Campbell of Walter Football lists Smith as the third-best receiver in this draft class.

"If Smith were 20 pounds heavier, he would be a top-five pick," Campbell wrote in Tuesday's update. "The only knock on Smith is his thin build, but otherwise, team sources rave about him and say he is a natural football player. Smith's excellent speed and suddenness turn him into an amazing receiver who can create separation with incredible route-running and the ability to get open for his quarterback."
