The same week West Virginia opened the WVU football spring practice session, a player announces he is in the transfer portal.

Linebacker Tirek Austin-Cave posted a screenshot of WVU approving his request to enter the portal on X (Twitter) on Tuesday.

Austin-Cave (6-foot-1, 225 pounds) spent two seasons at Miami before transferring to WVU in 2022. He appeared in 17 games during for the Hurricanes.

As a recruit in high school, Austin-Cave was ranked as a three-star prospect. In Austin-Cave’s senior season, he recorded 148 tackles, 11 sacks, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. Austin-Cave was listed as the No. 16 player in New Jersey, according to Rivals.

Austin-Cave appeared in three games for the Mountaineers in 2023, recording three total tackles. While he has never been a significant part of the WVU defense, his exit can impact the depth, especially at a thing position like linebacker. Austin-Cave will now have two more years of eligibility at his next school.
