The quarterback situation in Stillwater remains fluid as Oklahoma State continues to navigate its transition under interim head coach Doug Meacham, and this week brought some clarity, but not necessarily the kind Cowboys fans were hoping for.
Meacham confirmed Monday that sophomore quarterback Zane Flores is “probably not going to participate this week,” citing an upper-body injury amid inconsistent play. That development leaves Oklahoma State evaluating two other options at quarterback: Sam Jackson V and Banks Bowen, who will battle for the starting job heading into this weekend’s matchup.
It’s been a bumpy stretch for Oklahoma State’s offense since the departure of longtime head coach Mike Gundy, and Meacham’s comments reflect a team still searching for rhythm and reliability under center. Flores, who has shown flashes of potential this season, struggled with both consistency and decision-making before sustaining his injury. His absence opens the door for a new face to take control of an offense that’s been up and down through the first half of the season.
Sam Jackson V, a transfer from Auburn, brings dynamic athleticism and experience at the Power Four level. He’s played both quarterback and wide receiver during his time at multiple different schools, which provides a different look than the typical option.
Banks Bowen, on the other hand, offers a steadier, more traditional approach at quarterback. The redshirt freshman has drawn praise for his composure and understanding of the system, though his live-game experience remains limited. Depending on how practices unfold this week, the Cowboys could find themselves leaning on a two-quarterback rotation or tailoring their game plan based on matchups and health.
Regardless of who lines up under center, Meacham emphasized the importance of cleaning up execution and finding balance offensively. The Cowboys have struggled to sustain drives and finish possessions, something they must correct to stay competitive in Big 12 play.
With Flores sidelined and the offense in flux, this week represents an opportunity for someone to seize control of the position, and, perhaps, the team’s direction for the rest of the season.
As Meacham works to stabilize things in Stillwater, the message is clear: the quarterback job is open, and it’s up to Jackson or Bowen to prove they can lead the Cowboys forward.
