Jerry York, winningest NCAA hockey coach, retires after 50 years behind the bench

The 76-year-old York retires as college hockey's all-time winningest head coach, finishing with a 1,123-682-128 record. 

"I leave knowing that it is the right time to go," York said via NHL.com. "The book hasn't closed, but it is time for me to start a new chapter." 

Over his head coaching career, York has won five NCAA championships, 11 Hockey East regular-season championships, and the Hockey East Tournament Championship and Beanpot Championships nine times each. 

York has also won several individual awards, including winning Hockey East Coach of the Year five times, most recently in 2021. 

In 2019, York was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. 

Over his 50-year head-coaching career, York has coached at Clarkson (1972-1979) and Bowling Green (1979-1994) before spending the last 28 seasons leading the Eagles. 

In seven seasons with the Clarkson Golden Knights, York went 125-87-3, finishing first in the ECAC in 1977. 

Next, York led the Falcons of Bowling Green for 15 seasons, going 342-248-31 and winning the NCAA Championship in 1984. 

In 1994, York returned to his alma mater, Boston College, where he played from 1963 to 1967. 

In his final season of coaching, Boston College finished this season with a 15-18-5 mark. All-time leading the Eagles, York is 656-34-94, a .641 winning percentage.
