Keegan McKenney just experienced the highlight of his life, unaware that his time on Earth was about to end.

The 22-year-old died on May 10 following a car crash in North Carolina. He graduated less than 24 hours before the tragedy, Queens University of Charlotte said. The college athlete died in a Mother’s Day crash in Charlotte.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the deadly crash happened in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 10, on Queens Road West near the corner of East Boulevard.

What led to Keegan McKenney Losing His Life

Police said 22-year-old Keegan McKenney was a passenger in a BMW. That vehicle ran off the right side of the road and hit a tree. Officers said firefighters had to cut three people out of the car. McKenney, unfortunately, did not survive.

Cops stated everyone was wearing seatbelts when the crash happened. They said on May 12 that more investigation was needed to determine if speed or impairment was a factor in the crash.

Following his death, Queens University of Charlotte confirmed on social media that Keegan McKenney was a member of the school’s swim team.

“We honor the life of Keegan McKenney — a cherished teammate, friend, and member of the Queens family whose impact will never be forgotten,” the school posted. “Our thoughts are with all who knew and loved him during this incredibly difficult time.”

McKenney was a standout swimmer who achieved significant success as a Maine state champion and a competitive collegiate swimmer at Queens University of Charlotte.

He specialized in butterfly and individual medley events. Keegan was recognized as a dedicated athlete, earning accolades for his performances at both the high school and college levels. Among his accomplishments was placing 3rd in the 200 Y Fly and 6th in the 400 Y IM at the 2025 ASUN Championships.

McKenney also contributed to Queens University’s win at the 2025 ASUN Championships.
