Former Australian captain Aaron Finch has backed Shubman Gill to succeed as ODI captain for India during their upcoming tour of Australia. Gill has replaced Rohit Sharma. The BCCI recently announced the 15-player squad for the three-match series beginning in Perth on October 19.

In his conversation with the ICC, Finch highlighted the benefit that Gill will gain from having both Rohit and Virat Kohli on the field. “Shubman has already demonstrated his leadership abilities in both T20 and Test cricket, so I’m certain this will be no different. He’s a fantastic player, particularly in the white-ball formats, and the way he led against England in the Test series is a major accomplishment, proving that he’s ready to take the next step and lead India in all three formats,” Finch said.

Finch drew a comparison between Gill’s current situation and his own experience as Australia’s captain. “When you reflect on that England Test series, Shubman didn’t have many people to turn to for guidance while on the field, but he handled the situation brilliantly,” he said.

“With experienced players like Rohit and Kohli around, he’ll benefit. Having them there gives him the opportunity to discuss ideas with them, both on and off the field, about how he wants the team to move forward, as they’ve been such integral parts of the team for so long,” Finch added.

With India gearing up to play Australia, the focus will be on Gill to see how he directs the team, puts his plans into action, and builds upon his early successes. Finch’s support highlights the faith cricket experts have in Gill’s ability to lead.
