Former South African cricket star AB de Villiers has found himself at the centre of a heated debate after his remarks on the controversial trophy presentation following the Asia Cup 2025 final. India triumphed over Pakistan by five wickets to clinch the prestigious title, but the post-match celebrations were overshadowed by the team’s refusal to accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief Mohsin Naqvi.
This unusual gesture, widely seen as a protest against administrative decisions, quickly became the focal point of discussion among fans and experts alike.
De Villiers expressed disapproval of India’s stance, arguing that political issues should remain separate from the game. “Team India sort of weren’t happy with who was handing out the trophy. I don’t feel that belongs in sport. Politics should stay aside,” he stated during a discussion on his YouTube channel. His comments triggered a wave of criticism online, with many accusing the former cricketer of overlooking the deeper reasons behind India’s protest.
Elaborating on his viewpoint, De Villiers emphasised the importance of maintaining the purity and celebratory nature of sports. “Sport is one thing, and it should be celebrated for what it is… It does put the sport, the players … in a very tough position,” he added, suggesting that such acts of defiance shift attention away from athletic achievement and toward off-field controversies.
Social media users, however, were quick to challenge his opinion, arguing that athletes sometimes have no choice but to use the sporting platform to make a statement, especially when decisions by governing bodies are perceived as unjust. Critics claimed that De Villiers’ comments reflected a simplistic view of the situation and failed to acknowledge the underlying tensions between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the ACC.
Despite his criticism, De Villiers did not hold back in appreciating India’s stellar performance throughout the tournament. He lauded the team for their consistency, composure, and ability to deliver under pressure. “They look like they’ve got a lot of talent … they play the big moments well,” he remarked, highlighting India’s unbeaten run on their way to the title.
The controversy, however, continues to dominate headlines, raising larger questions about the intersection of sport and politics. While many agree with De Villiers’ call to keep politics out of the game, others believe that cricket, being a powerful platform, inevitably reflects broader issues beyond the boundary ropes.
