Afghanistan are all set to step into a format they seldom get the chance to play, Test cricket. On June 6, India will host Afghanistan for a one‑off Test in New Chandigarh, marking a symbolic return for the visitors.
Interestingly, it was in India eight years ago that Afghanistan’s Test journey began. At the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, they faced India in their inaugural Test in June 2018. The debut was a harsh initiation: beaten inside two days by an innings and 262 runs after being asked to follow on.
Now, almost eight years later, Afghanistan return with the experience of 12 Tests under their belt. Led by Hashmatullah Shahidi, they arrive as underdogs, but for them, the journey itself carries more meaning than the immediate results.
Afghanistan are not yet among the top nine Test‑playing nations and therefore remain outside the ongoing ICC Men’s World Test Championship. Their Test record reflects a side still finding its feet:
Matches played: 12
Wins: 4 (two against Zimbabwe, one each against Bangladesh and Ireland)
Losses: 7
Draws: 1
