Hours after announcing his retirement from all forms of cricket, former India spinner Amit Mishra’s year-old interview with Shubhankar Mishra has resurfaced and is doing the rounds on social media. Mishra had sensationally confessed a year ago to have indulged in age fraud.

Ex-Indian spin icon and a part of the 2013 Champions Trophy-winning side, Amit Mishra called time on his two-decade long playing career. The 42-year-old leggie represented India across all the three formats, playing 22 Test matches, 36 ODIs and 10 T20Is. He made his debut for the Men in Blue in an ODI against South Africa in 2003, but his long career was marked by only a handful of international appearances.

Mishra picked up 76 wickets in Tests, 64 wickets in ODIs, and 16 wickets in T20Is. A master of variation and control, the Haryana-born spinner however, lost his place in the Indian setup in 2017, following the emergence of younger spinners like Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal. Despite his absence from the national team for eight years, he continued to excel in the IPL, and is the seventh-highest wicket-taker in the competition’s history.

Having announced his decision to retire only this week, an old video of Amit Mishra’s surprising revelation about having committed age fraud has caught the internet on fire. In July last year, he was interviewed by Shubhankar Mishra on his YouTube podcast. The 42-year-old had confessed that he was a year older than his documented age, and had committed age fraud upon the insistence of his coach.

Amit Mishra confessed that his true age was 42 at the time, despite being officially documented as 41. The spinner had explained that this change was an emotional decision made by his u-19 coach. Mishra had been on the verge of quitting cricket after multiple failed attempts to break into the professional ranks, and his coach suggested reducing his age by a year to give him an additional season of cricket.

Let me tell you, I have a one-year discrepancy, and my coach helped with that. It was quite an emotional story. He said, ‘From today, you are one year younger; now you have two more years.’ I agreed.

The video’s resurfacing has also brought to light the reason why Mishra decided to reveal his true age. The spinner chose to come clean after a humorous incident with Indian ODI captain Rohit Sharma . After a 2024 IPL match, Sharma jokingly commented on how Mishra could only be three years older than him, despite having made his international debut way back in 2003.

Amit Mishra Shares Thoughts on Highly Anticipated India-Pakistan Match at 2025 Asia Cup

Veteran Indian spinner Amit Mishra, who most recently announced his retirement from all formats of cricket, provided his take on the highly-anticipated scheduled India-Pakistan match, at the 2025 Asia Cup. The two rivals will take on each other on September 14, at the Dubai International Stadium.

There has been significant outrage about the scheduled India-Pakistan match, with many questioning the BCCI’s decision to proceed despite ongoing geo-political tensions. The two countries, a few months back, were at the brink of war, following the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack, which claimed 26 lives. There have been calls made from several sides for Team India to boycott the fixture, owing to the strained ties.

Some of those voices belong to former Indian cricketers like Harbhajan Singh, Kedar Jadhav and Manoj Tiwary. Former spinner Amit Mishra provided a unique take on the issue, as he confidently stated that the BCCI and the Indian team would decide what is in the best interest of the country. Mishra also emphasized that players should demonstrate the same love for their country as the fans. He said (via ANI News):

Just like everyone loves their country, we also love our country, and whatever decision will be taken, it will be in the interest of the country.

The Men in Blue last played against Pakistan at the 2025 Champions Trophy, where they comfortably triumphed by six wickets. That match also took place at the Dubai International Stadium after the Indian team refused to travel to Pakistan, the host nation, due to security concerns.
