The Asia Cup 2025 clash between India and Pakistan sparked major controversy after Fakhar Zaman’s dismissal. The left-handed batter was declared out caught behind off India’s bowling, with Sanju Samson completing the catch. However, doubts quickly emerged over whether the ball had touched the ground before being taken.
Legendary Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar openly questioned the third umpire’s decision, calling it unfair and below the expected standard. He expressed frustration that despite advanced technology, such a crucial moment was mishandled in a high-profile encounter.
Shoaib Akhtar voiced his anger at the lack of conclusive evidence shown during the review. He stressed that with so many cameras in place for a marquee event, more angles should have been reviewed to reach a fair decision. “There are 26 cameras. Only two cameras were shown. If you look at the other angle, Fakhar Zaman was not out,” Akhtar remarked.
He further argued that when replays are inconclusive, the batter should be given the benefit of doubt rather than ruled out. According to him, Fakhar’s wicket came at a critical time and had a huge impact on the flow of Pakistan’s innings.
Beyond this single incident, Akhtar used the opportunity to highlight broader concerns regarding the quality of officiating in international cricket. He stated that the third umpiring in Fakhar’s case “was not up to the mark” and insisted that decisions must be based on solid, unquestionable evidence, especially in high-pressure India-Pakistan contests. Akhtar maintained that players invest enormous effort in such tournaments, and controversial calls undermine the spirit of competition.
He reiterated that Fakhar “deserved the benefit of doubt” since the visuals were not conclusive. His comments have reignited debate on whether cricket technology, despite its sophistication, is always applied fairly and consistently.
