The Australian cricket team has struggled mightily at the 2026 T20 World Cup and has now been eliminated after back-to-back losses to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka.

Australia opened the tournament strongly with a 67-run victory over Ireland, but subsequently faltered in two winnable matches. Chasing 170 against Zimbabwe in their second game, the batting lineup never found rhythm, folding for 146 and suffering a second consecutive T20 World Cup defeat to the African nation.

The Aussies again started brightly against Sri Lanka on Monday, with quickfire fifties from openers Travis Head and Mitch Marsh setting the tone. However, once the pair was dismissed, the innings unraveled. Australia were bowled out for 181, and Sri Lanka chased down the target in just 18 overs, powered by an unbeaten century from Pathum Nissanka.

Placed in Group B, Australia finished with just two points from three matches. Their Super 8 hopes depended on Zimbabwe losing their remaining fixtures, but when Zimbabwe’s match against Ireland was washed out on Tuesday, Australia’s elimination was confirmed, marking their first group-stage exit at a T20 World Cup since 2009.

Australia, traditionally a dominant force in ICC tournaments, was dealt early setbacks with Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins ruled out through injury. Marsh also missed the opening two games, including the defeat to Zimbabwe.

Although Marsh and Head produced a strong opening partnership against Sri Lanka, the rest of the batting order failed to capitalize, allowing the co-hosts to secure a comfortable victory and a place in the Super 8.

Ultimately, it has been a stunning downfall for Australia. While their bowling resources were depleted, the batting unit underperformed, raising questions about the selection of Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, and others. As they confront their first group-stage exit in 17 years, the team can only blame itself.

The men in gold will now face Oman in their final match on Friday, seeking a consolatory win before heading home.
