Mike Hesson explained the reason for Babar Azzam's batting position change during the Namibia match while admitting that his role did not match the team's T20 World Cup 2026 plans. The former Pakistan captain did not get an opportunity to bat against Namibia after his poor performance against Netherlands USA and India. Hesson reported that Babar maintains a T20 World Cup strike rate below 100 which he recognized as an unsuitable requirement for the team's present needs.

Hesson explained to the media that the team decided their roles for the Super 8 match against New Zealand. Babar understands his strike-rate issues according to Hesson. The coach explained that the team wants Babar to play his best after starting in the middle overs because he needs time to develop his performance and build speed. Hesson explained Babar's absence from the Namibia match by stating that the 12th over did not provide suitable chances for him to bat because the team needed players who could deliver strong performances during the final overs.

Hesson said: “Look, it’s the role the team requires, and Babar is well aware of that. I think he’s well aware his strike rate in the powerplay in World Cups is less than 100. We think he’s a fine player through the middle if required, especially if we’re in a bit of trouble. The other day, when we got to the 12th over mark, Babar Azam was not the best person to come in. We have other options who can perform that role better at the end. Babar is the first to acknowledge that. He knows he has a certain set of skills the team requires, and at times other players can perform certain roles more efficiently.”

Babar, who serves as a captain for Pakistan, has not met performance expectations during the T20 World Cup because he lacks experience as a player. The middle order batsmen face extra pressure because he has scored 5 runs, 46 runs, and 15 runs in three matches.
