Cricket Australia is set to take an "historic step" by hosting the opening fixture of the BBL 2026-27 edition in India. The opening match of the T20 competition will be held in the Chepauk stadium, home to Chennai Super Kings, IPL's premier T20 franchise. This would be the first time any BBL match will be held outside Australia.
The Cricket Australia has already communicated with all eight BBL franchises and requested expressions of interests to take part in the opening game of the upcoming season. The board has also stated that the decision regarding which two teams would play the inaugural match rests with the franchises.
The decision by Cricket Australia comes in tandem with its efforts to attract Indian investment into the Australian domestic competition as well as the Indian cricket market.
As per reports from SEN Cricket, Cricket Australia will be bearing most of the expenses for the opening fixture, although, it is yet to be approved by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Tom Morris, Cricket Australia representative for the bid, had said: "This is a wider strategy... It is in order to grow Big Bash internationally and there are at least two franchises that are close to being sold and we have reached out and said look we want to get investment from Indian businessmen and, IPL owners." With the IPL being the best T20 league on the planet, the move seems reasonable.
The 15th edition of the BBL was concluded on January 2026 as Perth Scorchers defeated Sydney Sixers in the final held at the Perth Stadium, in Western Australia, claiming their 6th BBL title. The two franchises boast talented line ups, including global superstars like Steve Smith and Babar Azam and hence are strong contenders for the historic Chennai opener later this year.
This match is set to be scheduled for December 12th, if the plans get the approval. Cricket Australia's approach to host the opening game of BBL in India is seen as an opportunity to bring together, both the cricketing nations and could lead to increased interactions between domestic leagues across the world.
This unprecedented decision reiterates the aim of Cricket Australia to increase the stature of the BBL by making it an international brand and attracting investment from across the globe and in the process, expanding the scope of T20 cricket.
