The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued an update on Shreyas Iyer after the middle-order batter sustained an injury while fielding in the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). The BCCI confirmed that Iyer was taken to the hospital following a rib cage injury.

The incident took place in the 34th over of the first innings when Iyer dived to take a catch off Alex Carey’s bat from backward point. He landed heavily on the ground and appeared to be in considerable pain. The 30-year-old eventually walked off the field with the team physiotherapist and did not return. The BCCI’s official statement read as follows:

“Shreyas Iyer sustained an injury to his left rib cage while fielding. He has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation and assessment of his injury.”

Shreyas Iyer delivered a stellar performance in the second ODI at Adelaide Oval, scoring 61 runs off 76 balls and forming a crucial 118-run partnership with Rohit Sharma.

Shreyas Iyer Expected To Bat Lower In The Order For Third ODI

The Mumbai-born cricketer was expected to move down the batting order in the third ODI at Sydney due to his injury. However, the adjustment proved unnecessary as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli comfortably chased down the target of 237, winning by nine wickets to secure a consolation victory for India.

Rohit, who had scored a resilient 73 in the second ODI at Adelaide, continued his excellent run with an unbeaten 121 in Sydney. Kohli, after recording two ducks in the opening games, returned to form with an unbeaten 74, sharing an unbroken 168-run partnership with Rohit.

During this innings, Kohli also became the second-highest run-scorer in ODI history, surpassing Kumar Sangakkara’s 14,234 runs. India required just 38.3 overs to reach the target, successfully avoiding a series whitewash.
