The Board of Control for Cricket in India has chosen to search for new players after Suryakumar Yadav. The move had been expected for some time. The T20I captain of India who took over from Rohit Sharma after the T20 World Cup 2024 faced major difficulties during his batting performance. The BCCI now considers Shreyas Iyer as the upcoming leader of the team because Suryakumar led India to victory in the T20 World Cup 2026 but his batting skills have declined.
The Times of India reports that the BCCI intends to change who leads the Indian T20I team. The team would benefit from this decision because it would prevent them from using Suryakumar who currently struggles with his batting performance. Shreyas has been actively seeking the position since he started his campaign. Many felt this shift was only a matter of time. The Indian management appears focused on building a fresh leadership group ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028 and the Los Angeles Olympics later that year.
The strategy had always been clear. Teams now organize their activities into two-year planning cycles because T20 World Cups take place every two years. Rohit Sharma continued to lead India until his retirement from international cricket at the 2024 event because he understood that he needed to complete one more cycle after India lost the 2022 semi-final match. Suryakumar received selection from India while Hardik Pandya served as another top candidate who could have been chosen. The decision reportedly came after advice from Rohit, former head coach Rahul Dravid, and Gautam Gambhir.
The partnership of Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar worked perfectly for the main target, winning the T20 World Cup 2026. The team's success enabled them to establish what many people considered to be one of India's best T20I teams throughout history. Suryakumar the batter achieved his highest performance during his captaincy period which remained his most successful time in cricket.
SKY maintained a remarkable strike rate of approximately 170 during his international cricket career while serving as India's T20I team captain. From 2021 to around 2024 he established himself as one of India's greatest T20 batsmen.

His batting performance experienced a significant decline after he assumed the captaincy role. Throughout the entire year of 2025 he was unable to achieve any fifty-plus performance for India. The team supported him during his extended tough period until he achieved success before the T20 World Cup 2026. He began the tournament with an outstanding performance of 84 not out against the USA but he failed to continue his successful start.
Suryakumar faces criticism because he fails to achieve high-scoring performances during important games. The Indian captain displayed this problem again at the current ICC tournament when he scored 18 runs during the virtual quarter-final against West Indies 11 runs during the semi-final against England and 0 runs during the final against New Zealand.

TOI reported that Suryakumar suffered from a pre-existing injury before the T20 World Cup. The report said that since IPL 2025, he had often played with a heavily strapped right wrist and avoided drills that put direct pressure on it. He used to tape his wrist before batting sessions which occurred before most of his matches.
The issue became more visible during the T20 World Cup. Before practice sessions, he would ask team doctor Dr Rizwan Khan for cotton pads and brown tape to support the wrist. The two of them worked together on it before Surya went to bat at that time. The same procedure took place at multiple locations which mostly remained hidden from public view. The BCCI planned to evaluate Suryakumar's captaincy after India's T20I series against England according to earlier reports but the team management now wants to begin a new chapter.
