Despite a run of setbacks in the Ashes and England’s exit in the T20 World Cup 2026 semi‑final at the hands of India in Mumbai, Brendon McCullum will remain England’s head coach across formats. The semi‑final loss had triggered debate about his role, but the England and Wales Cricket Board is backing him.
England’s T20 World Cup semi-final was slammed and other results in limited-overs cricket and Test matches have been ordinary as well. England failed in the Ashes Down Under, reignited scrutiny over McCullum’s leadership. The off-field controversies during the tour further intensified chatter about potential shifts in the coaching setup.
In spite of mounting pressure, McCullum confirmed his intent to remain at the helm.
“I am enjoying this role. It’s an incredible position to be in. Naturally, it comes with its challenges, but that’s part of the job. We’ve accomplished some fantastic things over the past few years, but there’s still a lot more to achieve with the team in every format,” he said.
“I’d like to continue, so we’ll see how things develop in the near future. For now, it’s about getting home, and hitting the golf course. It’s also a chance to pause, reflect, and take an honest look at what’s working and what isn’t. I’d love to help guide the team into the next phase,” he added.
ECB is keen to continue with McCullum as head coach. The New Zealand great also received support from England’s white-ball skipper Harry Brook, who backed him strongly following the World Cup semi-final defeat.
England’s disappointing Ashes tour in Australia has prompted the ECB to open a formal review into the side’s performances.
