India's victory in the 2025 Champions Trophy was intended to be a moment of celebration, but the day took an unexpected turn for Pakistan. Despite being the official host of the tournament, the reality of the situation felt quite different. Political tensions meant that India couldn't compete on home soil, leading to all matches, including the final against New Zealand, being held in Dubai.
Initially, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi was slated to appear on stage post-match, but when he fell ill, the ICC chose not to send a representative from the Pakistan Cricket Board to fill in. This decision left Pakistan entirely sidelined during what should have been a proud moment, sparking confusion and frustration.
Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar didn’t hold back his frustration. Taking to social media platform X, he vented: "There wasn’t a single representative from the PCB on the podium, even though Pakistan was the host of the tournament. I can’t understand why no one was there to represent the country. It’s beyond me to even think about. There should have been someone on this world stage." His remarks resonated with fans, igniting a wave of similar sentiments across social platforms.
The ICC later claimed that only elected officials from the host nation were permitted on stage, a clarification that offered little comfort to those upset by the exclusion. Notably, Sumair Ahmed, PCB's chief operating officer, was present but not called upon to represent the board, which fueled further outrage.
In light of the situation, PCB officials requested a public acknowledgment of the oversight. One official expressed their disappointment over the blatant neglect of Pakistan's position as the host and emphasized the need for a clear explanation to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
This wasn't just a singular misstep. Earlier in the tournament, Pakistan's name was inexplicably absent from the group stage match broadcast logo. In a bizarre incident, the Indian national anthem was mistakenly played at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium before a match between Australia and England. Such oversights have only intensified concerns among Pakistani fans and officials that their cricketing interests are being ignored on the world stage.
Cricketing icon Wasim Akram, speaking during an online discussion, questioned, "We were the host, weren’t we? How come even the COO of PCB or whoever was representing (Naqvi) wasn’t on stage? Were they not invited? I don’t know what the story is, but it definitely looked odd to me"
With tensions still high, PCB officials are adamant about receiving satisfactory answers and have threatened to escalate the issue to the ICC Board of Governors if necessary. Critics argue that the ICC appears reluctant to confront the powerful Board of Control for Cricket in India, which holds significant sway in the sport.
As fans reflect on the Champions Trophy 2025, it’s clear this event will be remembered for more than just India’s success. The lingering questions of accountability remain, and whether the ICC will make meaningful changes in light of this incident remains to be seen.
