Former Australia batter Damien Martyn’s family has released a statement addressing his fight with meningitis. Martyn was admitted to hospital on December 26 after falling seriously ill and being found in a critical condition, following which he was placed in an induced coma as his health deteriorated.
The family has since reassured fans that Martyn is responding positively to treatment and showing encouraging signs of recovery, easing concerns across the cricketing community.
“Damien is progressing well with his medical treatment. We also want to express our deepest appreciation to the medical team at Gold Coast University Hospital, who have been nothing short of amazing throughout this challenging time. This has been a trying time, and the family ask that you respect their privacy,” the statement read (via India Today).
Martyn’s former Australia teammate Adam Gilchrist had echoed similar sentiments a few days earlier regarding the 54-year-old’s recovery. Widely regarded as one of Australia’s finest batters, Martyn amassed close to 10,000 international runs, including 18 centuries, across 279 appearances.
Damien Martyn repeatedly hurt India at pivotal junctures during his career, with his influence most pronounced in the 2004 Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Indian soil. Fresh off a crucial unbeaten 88 in Australia’s victory over India in the 2003 ODI World Cup final, the right-hander showcased his mastery against spin in the four-Test series that followed.
After a subdued outing in the opening Test, Martyn produced a magnificent 104 in the second Test at Chennai to help Australia secure a hard-fought draw. He then delivered his defining performances in the decisive third Test at Nagpur, scoring 114 and 97 across the two innings as Australia sealed a commanding 342-run win.
Martyn capped off the series with another classy half-century in the final Test in Mumbai under challenging batting conditions. He ended the tour as the leading run-scorer with 444 runs at an average exceeding 55, playing a central role in Australia’s 2-1 series triumph and their long-awaited success in India.
