Former India spinner Amit Mishra has pointed to Rohit Sharma’s renewed physical fitness ahead of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which gets underway on December 24. The former India captain is believed to have lost close to 11 kg before resuming international duties in October and has backed that up with solid performances. Rohit notched up a half-century and a hundred in a three-match ODI series and maintained that run-scoring form against South Africa, collecting 146 runs from two games, including two fifties.
During an appearance on the MensXP YouTube channel, Mishra commented on Rohit Sharma’s physical transformation, pointing out that ideas of fitness have shifted in the modern game. He further advised cricketers to focus on maintaining a body structure that suits their performance, rather than concentrating only on appearance.
“Every individual’s body is different, and that has to be respected. These days, fitness is often judged by how lean someone looks, but it’s more important to have a natural build and stay genuinely fit. If you eat properly, train with commitment and look after your diet, fitness will follow. Being fit just for appearance doesn’t help. We’ve seen players who transformed quickly only to face physical problems later. Good rest, balanced meals and a natural routine matter. Gym work is useful, but spending time running and training outdoors is equally important. That approach and mindset are what truly count,” Mishra said.
According to Mishra, Rohit’s athleticism was never in doubt, as he consistently showed agility and awareness on the field.
“Rohit Sharma has returned and is in good shape, but he was fit earlier too. I’ve shared the field with him, and despite what people said about his build, I never saw him as sluggish or ineffective. He always contributed with the bat and stayed involved while fielding as well. Everyone is entitled to their own viewpoint,” he added.
Rohit is set to feature in the Vijay Hazare Trophy after being included in Mumbai’s squad for the opening phase. He is expected to link up with the Indian side for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand beginning January 11.
