The 2007 T20 World Cup match between India and England remains etched in cricket history — not just for Yuvraj Singh’s incredible feat of hitting six consecutive sixes off Stuart Broad, but also for the curious aftermath that followed. Days after the match, Broad’s father, former England cricketer Chris Broad, decided to turn the infamous moment into a light-hearted Christmas gesture.
He approached Yuvraj Singh to sign an Indian jersey, intending to gift it to his son Stuart. Chris recalled, “I got Yuvraj to sign an Indian shirt and gave it to him for Christmas.”
However, the present didn’t land as expected. When Stuart received the signed jersey, the memory of that painful over was still raw. “Apparently, he opened the present, saw it, and threw it in the bin,” Chris said. What was meant as a humorous peace offering instead reopened the wounds of one of the toughest moments of Stuart’s early cricket career.
For Yuvraj Singh, the six-sixes episode was both career-defining and humbling. When Chris Broad requested the signature, Yuvraj not only agreed but added a thoughtful message. He wrote, “I have been hit for five sixes in an over, and I know how it feels. To the future of England cricket, all the best.” The words reflected empathy from one player who had endured similar pain to another who had just faced a historic onslaught.
Yuvraj later recalled Chris Broad jokingly telling him, “You almost finished my son’s career and now you need to sign this shirt for him.” The Indian all-rounder obliged in good spirit, unaware that the gesture would spark a very different reaction from the young fast bowler.
Years later, Stuart Broad reflected on that night and the lessons it taught him. What began as a humiliating episode became a turning point in his mental toughness. “I learnt a lot … I started building my warrior mode,” he said. Broad admitted he wished the over hadn’t happened but added that it “steeled” him into the competitor he became.
In hindsight, what was once a symbol of embarrassment evolved into a story of growth and resilience — and that discarded Christmas gift remains one of cricket’s most ironic chapters.
