Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood is determined to return to the World Test Championship (WTC) stage after missing the 2023 final against India due to a calf injury.
As Australia gears up to face South Africa at Lord’s in the WTC final starting June 11, Hazlewood is locked in a tight selection contest with fellow fast bowler Scott Boland for the final seamers’ spot.
Hazlewood, who arrived in England just days ago, played a pivotal role in helping Royal Challengers Bengaluru secure their first-ever Indian Premier League (IPL) title in Ahmedabad last week. Despite the transition from T20 to red-ball cricket, the 33-year-old remains focused on making a statement in the Test arena.
“Everyone understands the importance of Test cricket and the World Test Championship lends context to this vital format of the game,” said South Africa captain Temba Bavuma via the ICC's official Facebook page. “Lord’s is a fitting venue for this mega fixture and all of us will be out there trying to give our best against Australia.”
Australian skipper Pat Cummins echoed that sentiment, highlighting the team’s motivation and collective pride. “We are enormously proud to have the opportunity to defend the World Test Championship, especially at Lord’s. It’s a testament to all those involved over the past two years who have worked incredibly hard to reach the final,” Cummins stated.
As both teams finalize preparations, the challenge of adapting to England’s testing conditions, particularly after the high-octane IPL, remains a talking point. Test cricket’s slower tempo and tactical rigor demand mental and physical recalibration.
