Cheteshwar Pujara praised Jasprit Bumrah for producing a disciplined and highly impactful spell on the opening day of the second Test between India and South Africa in Guwahati. Although the surface offered limited assistance, Bumrah’s precision and control helped India create pressure at crucial stages.
His ability to outthink batters once again came to the fore, especially when he dismissed Aiden Markram by exploiting a known weakness. Bumrah finished with figures of 1/38 from 17 overs, maintaining India’s hold over the scoring rate as South Africa reached 247/6 after electing to bat first.
Cheteshwar Pujara highlighted that Bumrah’s dismissal of Markram demonstrated his sharp understanding of opposition batters. He mentioned on Star Sports that Bumrah had been impressive from the start, even though an early chance was dropped. According to him, when Bumrah was reintroduced before Tea, he provided a vital breakthrough that shifted momentum India’s way.
Pujara recalled the way Jasprit Bumrah maintained accuracy even with the older ball, saying, “Jasprit bowled incredibly well even in his first spell. He didn’t get a wicket, a catch was dropped, but when he was brought to bowl before the Tea break, the breakthrough he gave was extremely necessary for India. The new ball swings, but he maintained his line and length even with the old ball.”
Pujara also described Bumrah’s clever deception against Markram, explaining how the seamer anticipated the batter’s expectations. He said, “He knows where Aiden Markram’s weak point is. When the catch went earlier to second slip, he (Markram) would have been expecting the ball to go away, but he (Bumrah) brought this ball in. So he reads the batters very well. The way Jasprit Bumrah goes wide of the crease and uses the angles, he knows he can breach Aiden Markram’s defense.”
Pujara emphasized that Bumrah’s value lies not just in the wickets he takes but also in the pressure he builds, which benefits the rest of the attack. He noted, “He had a massive impact, not only because of the wicket, but the number of runs he conceded. When you concede only 38 runs in 17 overs on such a wicket, it makes a huge difference. We talk about bowling in partnerships. He took only one wicket, but the other bowlers got wickets because the South African batters were under pressure.”
He further added that Bumrah contributes consistently even on days when his wicket tally is small. In his words, “When they bowl with him, their chances of taking wickets increase. He keeps the batters under pressure every time. You get one or two boundaries off his bowling if you bat extremely well. He is a team player who knows the role he needs to play even if he doesn’t get wickets.”
