Indian Premier League is not only entertaining the cricket lovers in the year 2026 but is also taking a step towards raising awareness among people regarding the environment through its special ‘green initiative’ taken up by the Board of Control for Cricket in India in collaboration with Tata Group.
In IPL matches, viewers have seen that during a match, they see a green tree symbol whenever a dot ball is delivered. The green tree symbol indicates the ‘green initiative’ taken up by the IPL in 2023 to promote tree planting activities.
According to the green initiative, 19 trees are planted for each dot ball delivered during league matches, while the figure rises exponentially to 500 trees per dot ball in the playoffs phase.
This movement has now turned out to be the most discussed off-the-pitch initiative in IPL’s history.
This number becomes even more staggering when considered on a per match basis. Nearly 950 trees are planted in a single match if both teams have around 50 dot balls combined, owing to just one game.
Considering the number of dot balls bowled throughout an entire IPL tournament, the total impact of the initiative becomes monumental. With around 3,000 to 5,000 dot balls bowled in one season, millions of trees are planted over numerous IPL seasons. The initiative has also instilled a sense of accountability among viewers, who now monitor the number of dot balls.
The campaign has witnessed massive contribution from several bowlers this season with their bowling efforts. Mohammed Siraj has bowled 109 dot balls in the ongoing IPL 2026 and thus stands one of the greatest contributors in the campaign.
Jofra Archer and Kagiso Rabada have also joined the bandwagon with over 100 dot balls in IPL 2026. Collectively these three bowlers have already contributed in the plantation of over 6,000 trees during the IPL 2026.
The lot includes other key performers like Mohammed Shami and Anshul Kamboj.
However, the record of the highest dot balls bowled in an IPL season is held by Dale Steyn who bowled 211 dot balls for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013, but he was not able to contribute for green initiative as it wasn't started back then.
The campaign is expanding year on year and stands as one of the unique features of cricket in promoting awareness.
