England batter Jacob Bethell was the top of the conversation in the early weeks of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. The 22-year-old was benched for the first few games of the season by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Phil Salt’s injury opened the doors for the southpaw to make his way into the side.

This caused former England skipper Alastair Cook to remark that the youngster should leave the league and come back home to play county cricket. This drew a firm response from Kevin Pietersen, who took to his X handle and wrote, “Alastair Cook has absolutely NO IDEA what it's like to be in the IPL. What's it's like to always be around the best players in the world? So his opinion on Jacob Bethell doesn't matter at all.”

With RCB set to take on the Mumbai Indians on Sunday evening, the batter was asked to give his take on the war of words between England’s former batting greats. Bethell said that he had made the right decision, and the IPL is a marquee tournament with all the best players in the world taking part in it.

Young English batter believes IPL will take his career places

After replacing his fellow English batter in the side, the chance to open the batting with Virat Kohli came calling. In the four games that Jacob has played this season, he has managed to score just 43 runs with a best of 20 that came against the Delhi Capitals.

In his chat with the media ahead of the RCB vs MI clash, the English batting sensation proclaimed that IPL experiences will help his career get better. He also said that the former players are entitled to their opinions, but his decision to stay back has made him happy, and the player feels that the franchise is the right place to be.

Chance for defending champions to do the double over Mumbai

Rajat Patidar’s side is fourth in the table with 12 points so far and still has four games to play. The game against the former five-time winners on Sunday at Raipur will be their 11th of the season. A win will take them to the top of the table thanks to their better run-rate. IPL 2025 winners had beaten their opponents by 18 runs earlier in the season at the Wankhede Stadium.

In the last game, the Royal Challengers side had lost to Lucknow by nine runs. Raipur, which hasn’t hosted an IPL for ten years, will see the likes of Kohli and Rohit Sharma take to the field once again this season as the league season is soon hurtling towards its finishing stages.
