The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the shortlists for September’s ICC Player of the Month awards, which recognize outstanding individual performances across a busy month of international cricket action. Three previous winners compete for second place in the ICC Men’s Player of the Month category: two Sri Lankan Test players and Australian all-rounder Travis Head. The ICC Women’s Player of the Month shortlist includes England’s Tammy Beaumont, Ireland’s Aimee Maguire, and UAE’s Esha Oza.
An independent ICC Voting Academy* and fans worldwide will now be invited to vote for the candidates at ICC’s official website. The result will be announced next week. Kamindu Mendis’ outstanding form since his Test debut continued in September, with an amazing 451 runs in four Tests at an average of 90.20. Mendis set a new record by being the first male player to hit fifty in his first eight Tests.
Mendis’s unbroken 182 in the second Test against New Zealand was a memorable performance. It helped Sri Lanka post a commanding first-innings total of 602/5 declared. Another key knock was his 114 in the first Test, which enabled Sri Lanka to return from a bad situation and win by 63 runs. Mendis also created history by becoming the fastest batsman in 75 years to amass 1000 Test runs in just eight matches, matching the famous Don Bradman‘s record of 13 innings.
Head’s superb batting performance during Australia’s tour of England and Scotland earned him a place on this list. In September, he played five T20Is and scored 182 runs with a phenomenal strike rate of 245.94. Head’s 23-ball 59 against England and 25-ball 80 against Scotland were standout performances that contributed greatly to Australia’s win.
Head’s success continued into the one-day international series against England when he scored 248 runs at an average of 82.66 and a strike rate of 120.97. The left-arm spinner took nine wickets in each Test match, proving his dominance over the series. Conversely, Prabath Jayasuriya‘s 5/68 in the first Test was critical in keeping New Zealand 63 runs short of their target on the last day. Jayasuriya also had an outstanding showing in September, collecting 21 wickets at an average of 27.90 in three Tests.
The September ICC Player of the Month honors impressive performances of men’s and women’s cricket players. Travis Head, Kamindu Mendis, and Prabath Jayasuriya are the top three men’s players. Conversely, Esha Oza, Tammy Beaumont, and Aimee Maguire are the women’s nominees so honored for making noteworthy contributions to their respective teams. The winner will be announced shortly, so check back!
