India were rocked in the first over of their second innings when James Anderson had Shubman Gill nicking to slip. It was a carbon copy of the opener's dismissal in the first innings, with Zac Crawley the catcher on both occasions. Hanuma Vihari and Cheteshwar Pujara waded through the remainder of that tricky 13-over spell to keep India in front in the rearranged fifth Test at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground. Earlier, Bairstow's third centuy in as many Tests helped England avoid the follow-on, although he couldn't prevent the visitors from taking a 132-run lead.

Brief scores: India 416 37/1 (Cheteshwar Pujara 17*; James Anderson 1-15) lead England 284 (Jonny Bairstow 106, Sam Billings 36; Mohammed Siraj 4-66, Jasprit Bumrah 3-68) by 169 runs
