India ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has opened up on his recovery after suffering a life-threatening rib injury during the third and final ODI against Australia. The 30-year-old batter, who was admitted to the ICU after internal bleeding due to a spleen laceration, took to social media to thank his fans.

“I’m currently in the recovery process and getting better every passing day. I’m deeply grateful to see all the kind wishes and support I’ve received – it truly means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts,” he wrote on X.

He took a brilliant catch of Alex Carey but was injured in the process. Iyer managed to walk off, but he fainted in the dressing room, leading to hospitalisation. He was taken to the ICU to avoid the spread of infection due to a laceration in his spleen.

The BCCU confirmed that Iyer was stable. India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav also revealed that he had a word with Shreyas, who has started replying to messages. “I wanted to talk to him, but he didn’t have the phone. I contacted the team physio, who told me that Iyer is recovering. After a while, I spoke to him and we exchanged messages, which shows he is getting better,” Suryakumar Yadav said.

Iyer has already been ruled out of the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa. There is no certainty whether the player will play ODI matches against New Zealand in January 2026.
