India suffered another batting collapse, with four batters heading back to the dressing room in the span of a few overs. Although Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a fifty in the first innings of the second Test against South Africa, his dismissal was the turning point as the Proteas managed to take two more wickets in the form of Sai Sudharsan (15) and Dhruv Jurel (0). Jaiswal amassed 58 runs off 97 balls, laced with 7 fours and 1 six at tea. India were 102/4 in the first session of Day 3, with the hosts losing KL Rahul in the first hour.
The right-handed batter was dismissed by Keshav Maharaj, with Aiden Markram taking the catch. Sudharsan, who was included in the Playing XI after Shubman Gill was ruled out, recorded another failure. The host nation is still 387 runs behind. Simon Harmer took two wickets while Maharaj and Marco Jansen took one wicket each. Earlier, the Proteas were dismissed for 489 on Day 2 of the contest.
Senuran Muthusamy amassed 109 runs off 299 balls, with the help of 10 fours and 2 sixes. Apart from him, Jansen showed his class with the ball, posting 93 runs off 91 balls, packed with 7 sixes and 6 fours.
Tristan Stubbs (49), Kyle Verreynne (45), Temba Bavuma (41), Markram (38) and Ryan Rickelton (35) were also impressive. For India, Kuldeep Yadav took 4 wickets while Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja dismissed two batters each.
Meanwhile, South Africa are leading the series 1-0, having won the Kolkata Test by 30 runs.
After the Test assignment, the two countries will compete in a three-match ODI series starting on November 30. Rahul will lead the side in the absence of regular captain Gill, who is recovering from a neck injury. The two teams will then move to a T20I series comprising five games.
