The BCCI announced a squad for the ODI series against Australia, with Rohit Sharma getting sacked. Shubman Gill is the new captain in the fifty-over format and will lead the team in the three-match ODI series. Rohit will play as a batter, and Virat Kohli is also making a comeback. Shreyas Iyer is the new vice-captain.
The decision was taken by the chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, and his team on Saturday in Ahmedabad. Virat and Rohit will play their first international match for the first time since the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Gill is now the captain in the ODIs and Test cricket and was Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy in the Asia Cup 2025.
Rohit was expected to lead the team Down Under, but the selection committee decided to move on from him after discussing with head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.
Virat and Rohit announced their retirement from Test cricket before the tour of England. The two batters are now active in only one format, having retired from T20Is following India’s success in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Rohit and Virat are preparing hard for the upcoming contests against the Pat Cummins-led team.
