In a major development for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), former India support staff member Abhishek Nayar has been appointed as the team’s new head coach ahead of the IPL 2026 season. As reported by LiveMint, this move marks a promotion for Nayar, who has been part of KKR’s coaching setup for several years.
He will replace Chandrakant Pandit, whose tenure came to an end after the 2025 edition of the tournament. The franchise reportedly felt that Nayar’s long association and deep understanding of KKR’s culture made him the ideal successor.
A source quoted in the report highlighted his importance to the team’s structure, saying, “Nayar has been with KKR for nearly seven to eight years and knows the franchise’s core philosophy better than anyone.” His experience and rapport with senior players are believed to be central to KKR’s decision to elevate him to the top coaching position.
Interestingly, Nayar may soon be handling two coaching roles simultaneously. Earlier this year, he was also named head coach of the UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League (WPL). The report notes that this dual responsibility could make him one of the few Indian coaches to manage both men’s and women’s franchises concurrently.
However, questions have been raised about potential scheduling or conflict-of-interest issues. The LiveMint article clarifies that the WPL is scheduled for January, while the IPL typically begins in March, leaving enough time between the two tournaments. A source close to the development mentioned, “It is technically possible for him to handle both teams since the tournaments don’t overlap, but a final decision will depend on franchise agreements and BCCI’s stance.”
Nayar’s journey with KKR began in 2018, when he joined as part of the franchise’s backroom staff. Over the years, he became an essential figure in shaping player development and team culture. He also had a brief stint with the Indian national team as assistant coach under Gautam Gambhir, though that role was short-lived.
With Gambhir now part of KKR’s leadership group, the reunion between the two could bring strategic continuity. As LiveMint notes, “Nayar’s elevation reflects KKR’s confidence in his technical acumen and leadership approach.”
