The upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction could see some lesser-known names signing lucrative contracts. In the past, the mini-auction has seen teams breaking the bank for some unexpected names. Fast bowlers have also gone for huge amounts in the previous editions of mini-auctions.

The impending mini auction could see successful teams like Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Rajasthan Royals (RR) go for an overhaul after getting unsatisfactory results last season. Meanwhile, teams who did well this year like Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will look to make a few key additions to bolster their sides.

Let's take a look at three underrated players who could shock everyone at the IPL auction.

IPL 2026 Auction: 3 underrated players who could shock everyone

3. Matthew Short

Matthew Short's versatility could help whichever franchise he joins. He can open the batting or even slot in the middle-order. Short can also bat in the lower-order. He can also chip in with a few overs of off-spin if needed.

Short has led teams successfully in franchise leagues and is currently a part of the Australia T20I team. The 29-year-old went unsold at the IPL 2025 mega auction, having a base price of INR 75 lakh. He was among the leading run-getters in the Major League Cricket (MLC) this year. If Short can get accustomed to the setup of the franchise he joins, he could make vital contributions for them in the IPL.

2. Pathum Nissanka

Pathum Nissanka has been scoring runs consistently across formats in international cricket for Sri Lanka. In the Asia Cup, he finished second on the list of leading run-scorers. He amassed 261 runs in six innings at an average of 43.50 and a strike rate of 160.12.

There are a few teams looking for reliable options at the top of the order. Nissanka fits the bill seamlessly. He is a brilliant player of spin as well as seam bowling. His ability to score quick runs while playing proper cricketing shots will help him excel in all sorts of pitches in India.

1. Jacob Duffy

Jacob Duffy has been a consistent performer for New Zealand in the shortest format of the game. In 30 matches, he has accounted for 41 wickets at an average of 16.93 and an economy rate of 7.18. This year, he is in red-hot form, having taken 23 scalps in 13 T20Is at an average of 13.82 and a strike rate of 11.60.

Duffy became the No. 1 ICC T20I bowler in April 2025 after a stunning series against Pakistan. He uses his height to generate bounce and his calmness while bowling in the death overs makes him a key component for the team he plays for. Even in matches where he does not take too many wickets, he keeps a tight lid on the scoring. Duffy could be a crucial asset for teams looking to beef up their bowling resources.
