The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 may be months away, but the buzz for major team reworkings has already begun rolling on. Many franchises are expected to release big names before the retention deadline and set the stage for an interesting mini-auction later in December.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) finished 10th in IPL 2025 and are going to embark on a massive rebuild. As per a report from Cricbuzz, CSK may release five big players before the retention deadline - Devon Conway, Sam Curran, Deepak Hooda, Vijay Shankar, and Rahul Tripathi.
Conway is the most surprising of the five. He proved to be critical during CSK's title-winning campaign in 2023 and was perhaps one of their most consistent batters. However, form and injuries in 2025 may have had a hand in this decision.
CSK will also have more funds going into the auction as a result of Ravichandran Ashwin deciding to retire, which frees up ₹9.75 crore from their purse. Reports are also linking Sanju Samson with the franchise, which is gaining serious attention towards CSK's big project of a complete fam makeover.
Another significant update comes from Delhi Capitals (DC), who are also looking at releasing Mitchell Starc, the costliest buy of IPL 2025 at ₹10.75 crore. The inconsistent performance of the Australian pace bowler and injury concerns may have forced DC to hunt for some fresh choice.
With Starc, T Natarajan is expected to be released by Delhi ahead of the November 15 retention deadline.
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are expected to part ways with Mayank Yadav, Akash Deep, and David Miller after entries from each player have suffered from repeated injuries and poor forms. On the contrary, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are set to release Venkatesh Iyer, who was bought for a whopping amount of ₹23.75 crore in the last auction but failed to deliver.
Rajasthan Royals (RR) biggest concern lies in the future of Sanju Samson. If his trade doesn’t go thorugh before the retention window closes, he may have to enter the auction pool. Reports say that RR is likely replacing Rahul Dravid with Kumar Sangakkara as head coach and letting go their Sri Lankan duo Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga.
According to Cricbuzz, the IPL 2026 mini-auction will be held somewhere between December 13 and December 15. While the site is still not confirmed, it is expected to be held in India. The franchise retention deadline has been set for November 15, 2025.
Pre-auction speculation suggests that numerous IPL powerhouses are gearing up for a massive rebuild, and hence, it could form one of the most unpredictable mini-auctions in recent memories.
