It is possible that IPL 2026 may get delayed by some days but The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not made any final confirmation yet on the exact starting date. There is no announcement so far but discussions doing the rounds in the cricketing fraternity are that there may be a slight delay in the start of the new IPL season. The commencement is likely to be delayed by two to three days, which suggests that the 1st match of IPL 2026 might be played on either 28th March of 29th March.

Earlier the board had mentioned the franchises during the IPL auction in Abu Dhabi that the new IPL season will start in the last on March 26 and conclude on May 31. It now seems like the case has been reviewed and there is no confirmation of the final to be postponed as well if the start date of the league is shifted.

The franchises are yet to receive any official communication from the board on this issue, but discussions amongst the teams are going on regarding a slight postponement in the start date. Since the time is running out, the teams are keen on knowing about the postponement in advance so that they can arrange for travelling, training camp etc.

One of the major factors causing the delay is that the state assembly elections for Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and West Bengal are due in few months and these dates might clash in certain cities. The Election Commission of India has not announced the poll schedule and the BCCI is awaiting the dates before announcing the full schedule of IPL 2026.

There are also rumors doing the rounds that the BCCI might release a partial schedule and the full list of matches will be announced only after the election dates are announced. This has happened in 2019 too with the general elections taking place in the country.

BCCI meets the broadcaster and the franchises

In between all this uncertainty, the BCCI also organised a meeting of stakeholders like the broadcaster JioHotstar along with all the 10 franchises in the BCCI office, few franchises attended the meeting online as well.

The intention of the meeting was to strategize how to create a buzz among the cricket fans ahead of the start of the new IPL season and the top officials were heard talking about improving the promotion in a better and bigger way on the lines of major sports leagues like the NFL and NBA.

The goal is to enhance coordination between the franchises and the broadcaster so that there is adequate promotion done across television and social media platforms. Players play a vital role in promotion, but in the absence of most of the key players joining the squad till only a week prior to the league, the franchises and broadcaster need to figure out ways.

With fans already eager to get back to action, the next few weeks should be crucial and a clear picture of the IPL 2026 should be out post the announcement of election dates.
