There is much buzz surrounding the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League, one of the major talking points being the trade between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings of Sanju Samson prior to the 2026 season.

Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran went to Rajasthan Royals in return for Samson. The trade was considered an evenly balanced move by many at the time, but following Samson's performance for India in the recent World Cup, question marks are being raised about whether the Royals were wise to let him go.

Samson was an integral part of India's ICC Men's T20 World Cup victory on Sunday, March 8 and despite playing only 5 matches during the tournament, the wicket keeper batsman finished as the highest run getter for India.

Samson’s T20 World Cup Performance Turns Heads

The Kerala born batter registered a staggering 321 runs across 5 innings in the tournament with an average of 80.25 and a strike rate of 198.15. This indicates the importance he had for the team in critical phases of the tournament.

The right hander played three sensational consecutive innings during the knockout stages of the tournament. He played a masterful knock of over 80 runs in the Super 8s stage against the West Indies. Following that up with another important performance against England in the semi-final. He ended with another match-winning knock against New Zealand in the final.

This phenomenal display earned Samson Player of the Tournament accolades, and his aggressive intent ensured India lifted the trophy andcemented his place in the Indian squad.

The 31-year-old had experienced a rather up-and-down career until recently but has now proved on the highest stage he can still perform. It is likely that fans will now expect him to be a regular fixture in India's limited overs side.

What the Trade Means for Rajasthan Royals

The former Rajasthan Royals stalwart had been part of the franchise since 2013 but left for Delhi in 2014 before returning two years later. The 31-year-old had been one of the most pivotal players for the Royals during his stint.

In fact, Sanju Samson is the highest run-getter for Rajasthan Royals in IPL history having scored 4219 runs from 150 innings at an average of 31.96 with 2 centuries and 26 half-centuries.

The performance for the Rajasthan Royals in the 2025 IPL season, however, wasn't up to his usual standards. Samson missed 5 games due to fitness concerns and Rajasthan Royals finished ninth in the table that season. The same situation was instrumental in the Rajasthan Royals management's decision to change their squad composition.

The management decided to bring in an all-round experience in Jadeja and Curran, as both players offer significant contributions with both bat and ball and that balance can play an important role in a long tournament such as the IPL.

However, the question that is now being raised in the minds of the Royals faithful is whether they were justified in letting Samson go following the current exhibition of his talents. It is expected that the 31-year-old will become a regular for the Chennai Super Kings in the years to come.
