The Mumbai Indians commenced IPL 2026 by achieving a convincing victory in their first match, which increased fan expectations for the team. The team experienced an initial successful period, but their performance began to decline after they suffered four consecutive defeats while showing poor performance in all areas of their game.

The attention now targets Hardik Pandya because he currently encounters challenges in his duties as both team captain and active player. His batting and bowling have not met expectations, and his decisions on the field are drawing criticism from fans and experts.

The Wankhede defeat against Punjab Kings increased pressure on Hardik Pandya as Mumbai Indians faced additional challenges. The former cricketer Irfan Pathan, who has frequently criticized him, again doubted his ability to lead as captain, while the Mumbai Indians faced ongoing difficulties during IPL 2026.

The relationship between Irfan Pathan and Hardik Pandya now appears strained, with Pathan openly targeting Pandya's performances and leadership in recent times. The analysis now shows a sharper distinction between two elements which formerly appeared to be standard analysis.

The speculation about Pandya stems from his on-field behavior and his recent cold reaction after the T20 World Cup 2026 victory. Irfan Pathan shared his strong opinion about Pandya's current form and ability to impact the game because Mumbai Indians faced pressure during IPL 2026.

Irfan Pathan explained Mumbai Indians' problems during IPL 2026 because there now exists increased public interest about Hardik Pandya. He also criticized Pandya's recent performances, pointing to his poor batting returns and limited impact with the ball during key moments this season.

Pathan told in his YouTube channel:

“Yes, we will talk about his captaincy but Hardik's batting average since 2024 is in the early 20s. We definitely expect better from him as a batter. Even if we talk about his bowling, he needs to do better with his bowling as well, especially inside the powerplay.”

The Pathan analysis of statistics also showed his deeper analysis through studying Pandya's body movements and his methods of dealing with stressful situations. The Mumbai Indians need to establish consistent performance while their captain faces pressure to succeed during upcoming games.

Irfan Pathan also raised concerns about Mumbai Indians’ bowling attack, noting the lack of variety with Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar who both failed to secure early wickets during powerplay situations.

Irfan further added:

"Mumbai Indians need to play proper wicket-taking bowlers. Out of the five bowlers playing currently, Shardul Thakur and Hardik Pandya are all-rounders, and Deepak Chahar is not taking wickets in the powerplay. They are left with just two bowlers then."

Irfan Pathan explained that Jasprit Bumrah needs to protect matches through his defensive role because the team failed to achieve early wickets. The current situation has extended Bumrah's wicketless streak while showing MI's operational failures and inadequate strategies for IPL 2026.
