England youngster Jacob Bethell has underlined the importance of adding as many runs as possible in the second innings of the ongoing Ashes Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. At the close of Day 4 of the fifth and final Ashes Test, England were placed at 302/8, holding a slender lead of 119 runs over Australia.
Bethell, unbeaten on a commanding 142, remained at the crease alongside Matthew Potts, with England hoping to stretch their advantage on the final day. Speaking in a video shared by England Cricket, the left-hander stressed that pushing the lead close to the 180-run mark would be ideal.
“We need to try and get as many, to be honest. I think 180 would be a dream now. Maybe more. I’m going to have to be smart around how I take risks and try and beat the gaps and beat the field. It’s obviously a big playing field. So there are twos out there as well. And yeah, just be smart around kind of what I let Potts and Tongue face when they do come out,” Bethell said.
Jacob Bethell acknowledged that patience and awareness would be vital when England resume batting. With the Australian bowlers expected to attack hard, Bethell explained the need to rotate the strike, find gaps, and manage risk carefully.
He also highlighted the responsibility of shielding the lower order, ensuring that tailenders like Potts and Josh Tongue are exposed only when necessary. His calm approach has already played a major role in swinging momentum England’s way, as his innings helped overturn Australia’s first-innings advantage and put the visitors ahead in a tense contest.
Bethell’s knock was made even more special as it marked his maiden first-class century, achieved on one of cricket’s biggest stages. The young batter admitted the moment felt surreal, especially with his family present in the stands. The innings not only etched Bethell’s name into Ashes history but also placed him in a rare list of players, including Kapil Dev, Marlon Samuels, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and Curtis Campher, to score maiden hundreds across formats in international cricket.
Reflecting on the milestone, he said, “I feel pretty good to be honest, I can’t lie. Yeah, lovely to do it in the Ashes on away soil. So yeah, I’m feeling pretty good. I got a few goosebumps and stuff when I saw the family over there just and all the boys up in the sheds kind of going hard. So yeah, it was unbelievable.”
