Day 2 of the second Test between South Africa and West Indies in Guyana continued to enthrall, after 17 wickets fell on the opening day, with South Africa bagging a 239-run lead. Even as Jason Holder showed the stomach for a fight, the Proteas clipped off West Indies’ last-three wickets relatively quickly – they had ended Day 1 on an abysmal 97/7 – before Aiden Markram (51), Kyle Verreynne (50*) and Wiaan Mulder (34*) delivered with the bat.

Markram dug into Jayden Seales after Lunch with three boundaries in an over. He was dropped on 42 by Alick Athanaze as West Indies’ frustration grew. However, West Indies suddenly roared back with three quick wickets for just 14 runs. David Bedingham registered a 10-ball duck, chopping a delivery that jagged back in onto the stumps.

The visitors collapsed from 120 for 1 to 140 for 5 which brought Kyle Verreynne and Wiaan Mulder to the crease. They wrestled the advantage with an unbeaten 84-run partnership, thereby consolidating the lead.

Brief Scores: South Africa 160 all out (Dane Piedt 38*, David Bedingham 28; Shamar Joseph 5-33, Jayden Seales 3-45) and 223/5 (Aiden Markram 51, Kyle Verreynne 50*; Jayden Seales 3-52) lead West Indies 144 all out (Jason Holder 54*, Keacy Carty 26; Wiaan Mulder 4-32, Nandre Burger 3-49) by 239 runs
