On the opening day of India’s home season for the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship, Jasprit Bumrah began making history. During the first Test against the West Indies in Ahmedabad, he became the fastest Indian bowler to claim 50 wickets on home soil.

Bumrah achieved this milestone by dismissing Windies batter Johann Layne for 1 in the second session at the Narendra Modi Stadium. He reached 50 Test wickets in just 1,747 deliveries, the fewest by any Indian bowler at home.

Bumrah Equals Fastest Indian Pacer to 50 Home Wickets

Jasprit Bumrah also matched the record for the fastest Indian pacer, in terms of innings, to reach 50 wickets on home soil. He achieved his 50th Test wicket in India in just 24 innings, equalling the legendary Javagal Srinath. The next quickest was iconic all-rounder Kapil Dev, who took 25 innings, while Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami feature in the top three with 27 innings each.

Siraj and Bumrah Crush West Indies

West Indies’ decision to bat first in Ahmedabad backfired as Indian pacers Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah shared seven wickets to bowl them out for 162. Siraj spearheaded the attack in the morning session, claiming three wickets as the visitors struggled at 90/5 by lunch.

Bumrah then took charge, taking two crucial wickets—dismissing Justin Greaves and Johann Layne—to finish with 3/42 from 14 overs. Siraj was the standout, ending with figures of 4/40 from 14 overs. Kuldeep Yadav (2/25) and Washington Sundar (1/9) also contributed with wickets, while Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Reddy went wicketless.

Bumrah’s workload management had sparked considerable debate during the England tour, where he featured in three of the five Tests despite being fully fit. When India captain Shubman Gill was asked whether the same approach would be followed in the West Indies series, he responded:

“We will take a call on match to match (basis), how long a game goes and how many overs a bowler bowls. Nothing is pre-decided.”
