It was in Zimbabwe’s Super 8 encounter against India, in the MA Chidambaram stadium, Chepauk that Brian Bennett has announced his arrival on the biggest stage of world cricket. With more than 27,000 people watching in utter silence, the youngster launched a mighty six over wide long-on against the Indian speedster, Jasprit Bumrah and launched into the spectators with Bumrah landing amidst them. Bennett didn’t just survive his first ball against Bumrah, he dominated him.
His was his 3rd fifty-plus score in the 4 matches he has batted in this T20 World Cup having played in both Sri Lanka and India under very different conditions. The Zimbabwe dugout cheered as Bennett raised his bat as captain Sikandar Raza slapped his bat in joy on the ground before embracing the 22-year-old.
Bennet said:
“I think Jasprit is always going to be a tough one to face. My thought process was just watch the ball as close as I can and just let my body do the actions. Yeah, the ball was in my zone and I just hit it.”
Bennett’s audacity wasn't restricted to Bumrah as he produced an innovative reverse-scoop against Hardik Pandya, who was only bowling to him, with both fine-leg and third-man on an attacking line.
Bennett said:
"Obviously you practice those shots in the nets……And the field normally tells you where the bowler is going to look to bowl. With fine leg and third man up, thought that’s a good option…it’s just literally keeping that clear mind."
Bennett also challenged Axar Patel to take him for 22 off 12, Manipulating the length of the deliveries of a flat deck. In Colombo Bennett showed that he knows to curb his aggression against the turn-heavy spinners like Dunith Wellalage and Dushan Hemantha.
Stuart Matsikenyeri, the fielding coach of Zimbabwe, said:
“In his first T20 World Cup, he has scored 277 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 135.78, dismissed just once. The sky is the limit for Brian. He is a seriously hard-worker and is a highly motivated youngster…… I wouldn’t put a bench on him because there’s a lot of good things ahead of him.”
Zimbabwe may have lost out on a chance for the semi-finals and the world on Bennett's maiden international hundred but there is no doubt he has sent a stern warning message to the rest of the world-he is ready for the biggest challenge of all.
