Former Indian cricket legend Kapil Dev has voiced his disappointment with the ongoing drama around India’s refusal to shake hands with Pakistan players during the Asia Cup 2025. The controversy emerged after the high-voltage clash between the two teams, which India won convincingly.

Kapil said, “Players should concentrate on cricket. Whether you want to hug someone or shake hands, that’s your personal choice. Don’t make a big issue out of it.”

Kapil, known for his straightforward opinions, advised both nations’ cricketers to avoid unnecessary distractions and keep their energy centered on the game. He stressed that cricket should remain the primary focus, not the side stories that dominate headlines after every Indo-Pak encounter.

When you play for your country, you should remember that people are watching you for your cricket, not these small controversies,” he added.

According to Kapil, whether a player chooses to shake hands, hug, or simply walk away is a personal matter. Turning such gestures into controversies, he said, is both avoidable and unproductive. For him, the spirit of cricket lies in how the game is played on the field, not in the off-field theatrics. He urged both boards and players to maintain professionalism and let cricket speak louder than the noise surrounding it.

Criticism of Overblown Reactions

Kapil Dev also criticized the way statements from players and officials are often exaggerated, adding unnecessary fuel to controversies. He pointed out that some remarks are deliberately magnified by media or rival camps, making small matters appear like major disputes. In his view, this not only takes the focus away from cricket but also puts players under needless mental strain.

Turning his attention to Pakistan, Kapil noted that their performance in the tournament so far has been underwhelming. Rather than being caught up in dramatic narratives, he suggested the team should reflect on their form and concentrate on improving their cricketing standards.

He emphasized that matches are won through skill and preparation, not off-field arguments. His advice was a reminder that reputations in cricket are built on consistent performances, not controversies.

Praise for India’s Form and Future Outlook

Kapil Dev also lauded India’s strong performance in the Asia Cup 2025. Having beaten UAE and Pakistan convincingly in the group stages, the Indian team, according to Kapil, looked organized, disciplined, and fully prepared for the challenges ahead. He commended their planning, team balance, and the way players have stepped up in crucial situations.

Expressing optimism, the 1983 World Cup-winning captain said he hoped India would go on to lift the Asia Cup trophy this year. He also highlighted how India’s ability to perform well in ICC tournaments reflects the depth and stability in their squad. Looking ahead, Kapil urged the team to remain focused, block out distractions, and continue to build momentum. For him, the ultimate goal remains clear—play fearless cricket and bring pride to the nation.
