Looking ahead to T20 World Cup 2024

The 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will be jointly hosted by the West Indies and the USA. It will be the first-ever ICC World Cup to have matches placed in the United States.

India will be a serious challenger in the next year’s T20 World Cup owing to a strong nucleus in the shortest format. The presence of impact players like Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and Rinku Singh can make India a strong contender for the title. The group stages will commence in June of 2024 and the tournament is expected to run through till the end of June.

The top eight teams from the 2022 tournament all receive automatic qualification for this tournament, meaning the following teams will feature at the 2024 T20 World Cup: Australia, England, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

Forty-one matches will take place in the Caribbean across six different islands, with semi-finals in Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana and the title decider set to be organized in Barbados on 29 June.

The tournament will commence on 1 June with co-hosts USA meeting neighbours Canada, while fellow hosts the West Indies will lock horns with Papua New Guinea in Guyana on the second day of group play.

The two hosting countries, the United States and the West Indies have fetched automatic berths in the tournament and the top two teams (excluding those already in) also receive automatic qualification, Afghanistan and Bangladesh in this case.

The remaining eight placed will be made up of the qualifiers, two from each of the African, Asia & European qualifications and then one from each of the Americas and East Asia-Pacific makes the cut.

A total of three stadiums in the USA and six in the Caribbean will stage the action during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 as the groups and fixtures for the ninth edition of the 20-over showpiece event were confirmed on Friday, January 5.

Ten of the 20 teams will play their first match of the 29-day tournament in the USA, with 16 contests to be held in Lauderhill, Dallas and New York. The marquee clash between India and Pakistan scheduled for the new Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in Long Island on 9 June will enthrall fans, for sure.

The format is such that all teams are divided into four groups consisting of five teams, with the top two sides from each group then advancing to the Super Eight phase of the tournament ahead of the knockout semi-finals and final.

Joining co-hosts USA in Group A are arch-rivals India and Pakistan, as well as Canada in their maiden appearance at the event as well as the European side Ireland.

Group B consists of the last two winners of the Men’s T20 World Cup in England and Australia, with the pair to take on Namibia, Scotland and Oman.

The West Indies are slotted into Group C alongside New Zealand, Afghanistan, Uganda and Papua New Guinea, while Group D holds South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Netherlands and Nepal.
