Hobart Hurricanes’ second victory of the season, a resounding seven-wicket win at home over Sydney Thunder, yanked them off the bottom of the points table.
Opting to bowl, Hurricanes had their opponents three down inside the PowerPlay. As a result, a period of consolidation followed for Thunder, giving way to a delayed push for fireworks at the death. In spite of captain Chris Green’s earnest efforts (33* off 17), they could only manage 150. Chris Jordan and Nikhil Chaudhary returned two wickets each in their parsimonious spells.
In stark contrast, the Hurricanes enjoyed a wicketless PowerPlay. Both openers did fall in quick succession but there was no dip in tempo as far as the chase was concerned with Macalister Wright (34 off 25) adding 85 with Ben McDermott in quick time. The latter remained unbeaten to polish off the manageable chase alongside Corey Anderson, who cracked a four and a six to expedite the finish.
